THE ASHTA-VINAYAK OF VIDARBHA TOUR

The devout can visit the eight temples of Lord Ganesha in Vidarbha Chitamani Ganesh at Kalamb, Ekchakra Ganesh at Kelzar, Shamivighnesh at Adasa, Varadvinayak at Nagpur Tekdi, Athra-bhuja [with 18 hands] at Ramtek Bhrushunda Ganesh at Mendha [Bhandara], Gourala Ganpati at Bhadravati, Panchanan [with five faces] Ganpati at Paoni . These are known as the Ashta-Vinayaks of Vidarbha.

ADASA

This ancient Ganesh temple, one of the Ashta-Vinayaks of Vidarbha is believed to be Swayambhu (self-evolved). The temple is a must-visit on the religious circuit and draws thousands of devotees all round the year.

MENDHA, BHANDARA

Mendha is a small village, 2 kms from Bhandara, where one of the Ashta-V inayaks of Vidarbha, known as Bhrushundi Ganpati is located. Legend has it that one of the ardent devotees of Lord Ganesh got converted into a statue of the lord himself.

KELJHAR

During the Puranic period, Keljhar was known as Virat Nagar. It is believed to be the place where Bhim, one of the Pandavas, slew the demon, Bakasur. The Bhonsalas of Nagpur have built a fort there, which houses an ancient statue of Lord Ganesh, one of the Ashta-Vinayaks of Vidarbha.
During recent excavations carried our around the Ganesh temple, a beautifully carved four-armed stone statue of Goddess Lakshmi belonging to the Yadav period and some Buddhist remains were discovered here.

TEKADI GANESH NAGPUR

This temple, located opposite the Main Railway Station (Nagpur), is one of the eight Ashta-Vinayaks of Vidarbha. The statue of Lord Ganesh is believed to be Svayambhu or self-evolved. It has intricately molded itself into the trunk of a huge Peepal tree. The temple, originally built during the Yadav period was subsequently destroyed. It was reconstructed and reinstalled by Raghuji Bhonsle I. It is also considered by devotees to be the city deity of Nagpur. Thousands visit the temple every month on special days.

BHADRAVATI

The Ganesh puran gives an interesting tale of this temple ,that it was built by a great Rishi, Gutsamad, who had invoked the blessings of Lord Ganesh and upon fulfillment of his wish, built this temple. Bhadravati is 24 kms north of Chandrapur on Nagpur road.

PAONI

This is a very ancient town of central India and was the capital of many an empire during its checkered history. This idol of Lord Ganesh has five faces and is believed to bestow His Grace on his devotees and remove all their difficulties

RAMTEK

The idol of Lord Ganesh here has 18 hands and is in the Temple complex on the hill fort popularly known as Ramtek. It is a very beautiful idol

KALAMB

This is one of the eight Ashta-Vinayak temples of Lord Ganesh in Vidarbha and is known as Chintaman Vinayak. This temple, located on the Nagpur Yavatmal road is 40 feet below ground level.
